Guidelines for Donated Materials

We’re pleased to announce that a handful of dedicated volunteers have stepped forward to sort all the donated materials that come into the Library throughout the year.  This is making our book sale set ups run very smoothly and has freed the library staff from most of the work involved with dealing with donated items.

Particularly interesting or new items are brought to the attention of the Library’s collection librarians for possible addition to the collection.  Our community has been incredibly generous with donations but unfortunately our storage capacity is limited.   The following guidelines are necessary to help us make the most of your donations and better manage donated materials.

Ÿ         The library will accept up to three boxes of materials at one time without prior arrangement.  Please bring them to the staff entrance on 2nd Street.  They can be left outside the door if you choose.  You may ask staff for a receipt for tax purposes.

Ÿ         All donations are final.  If you need an itemized list of donated materials, please prepare one before dropping your donations off.

Ÿ         If you have a larger number of items to donate please contact Steven Stehr at 509-335-2544 or Mary Hughes at 208-882-9198 to make arrangements for us to be at the library to take delivery of the items to save staff time.

Ÿ         We do not accept the following:

ü      Reader’s Digest Condensed Books.  These can be put on the free book exchange shelf upstairs in the vestibule but only a few at a time so as not to overwhelm this small space.

ü       Magazines of any kind.  There is a free magazine exchange rack upstairs near the children’s new book section.  Again, try not to overwhelm the fixture.

ü      Newspapers.  These are best recycled

ü      Textbooks or computer books.  These books are, unfortunately, often outdated as fast as they are printed.  Try the campus used book venues.

ü      Encyclopedia sets more than 5 years old.

ü      Soiled or damaged materials (water damage, moldy, smoke smelling, missing covers, broken spines, missing or falling out pages) If you wouldn’t buy it in a thrift store, please don’t donate it.  The Moscow Recycling Center now has a bin for books!

Ÿ         Donations that do not comply with these guidelines cause us to spend time and money to process and dispose of waste.  This is not an effective use of Friends’ resources or of your donation.  We appreciate your understanding.

Thank you for your support of the library!!!
